At least thirteen individuals perish and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.
A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an rapid pace, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled persistent questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an prompt halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was proposed pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
