Senate Approves Legislation to Make Public Epstein Documents

The Senate on this Tuesday passed without delay to a measure that will force the release of official records associated with the late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, following a near-unanimous vote in the lower house and a change of position by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The administration changed course after an extended period of trying to delay the joint action involving a case that has followed the president since his return to the White House.

Expedited Passage in Both Chambers

The Senate acted by unanimous consent, which needs acceptance from each senator but does not require a recorded vote, expediting the process. Hours earlier, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a massive majority.

Citizens have waited long enough. Those affected have waited patiently,” the Senate Democratic leader declared in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before asking the Senate to adopt it by consent. “Reveal the truth. Ensure full disclosure.”

Next Steps

The measure next will be sent to the president for his signature. Trump stated on the previous day that he would endorse the legislation.

Even though the president has for an extended period downplayed the controversy over the government’s handling of the scandal as a “Democrat hoax”, he signalled his support for the legislation over the weekend, and announced he would sign the measure if it is presented to him.

Response

The Democratic party, along with victims and their supporters who were present in a viewing area, cheered after the bill was passed. The only opposition came from Clay Higgins, who expressed concern he was concerned the measure would make public identifying details of people, potential suspects and others implicated in the investigation.
